The Federal Research Centre for Nutrition (FRCN), Karlsruhe, Germany is one of the research centres of the Federal Ministry of Consumer Protection, Nutrition and Agriculture (formerly - Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry). The FRCN has five different institutes, one of them - the Institute of Nutritional Economics and Sociology (Institut fuer Ernaehrungsoekonomie und -soziologie - IOES) - is the partner in this project.

The primary task of the BFE is to advise the Ministry on matters of human nutrition and consumer policy. It carries out basic and applied research in various areas in food sciences, human nutrition and consumer research, which is needed as the basis for such advice. The main research areas of the IOES are in the fields of determinants for human food behaviour, in development of menu planning systems and in information and education of consumers, especially to evaluate the effectiveness of consumer education programmes. The IOES has a staff of five scientists with competence in the following areas: human nutrition, nutrition epidemiology, dietary behaviour, nutrition sociology, home economics, and statistics.
